Heckscher Foundation for Children's Garden

The Williamsburg Garden was originally created by a multicultural group of neighbors in 1986. The site is located one block from an elementary and Charter Green School and is used by after school groups, as well as local community. With a grant from the Heckscher Foundation for Children a new a vibrant children's learning garden was created.

A lawn area with tables provides picnicking and instructional use. The updated design features sustainable elements such as:

a Clivus composting toilet with solar powered ventilation has been included to make this space comfortable for the community and school children;
a rammed earth block constructed 'casita' shed anchors the rear of the garden with an attached arbor and deck for storage;
rainwater is collected via channeled roof leaders to irrigate the garden of raised vegetable beds, blueberries and flowering shrubs.
