THE DIANA CENTER GREEN ROOF
Billie Cohen worked closely with Barnard’s Biology Department and students to plant an urban nature reserve atop the LEED-Gold certified Diana Center; Sibyl Levy Golden ’38 Ecological Learning Center. This living laboratory hosts approximately 2,625 native plants divided into habitat and three specific plant communities: Hempstead Plains, Rocky Summit, and Native Habitat.
Progress of individual plants will be recorded and compared to data collected by Riverdale Country School’s Science Department, which has similar rooftop plantings. Studies will also be conducted to monitor the birds and insects attracted to the newly created habitat.
Since its opening in February, the The Diana Center has won a Progressive Architecture Award as well as the AIA New York State “Award of Excellence” and the “Best in New York State” award.
