Fresh Start Garden of Hope

In Spring 2009, Family Reentry leased a one acre vacant lot located across from the Church and housing facilities that help to change the lives of formerly incarcerated men, their families, and the surrounding community. Billie Cohen ltd. was engaged by Family Reentry to design and implement a park and organic garden in response to the requests and vision of ex-offenders who wish to give back to the community which has supported them.

Before the conception of the Fresh Start Garden of Hope and Eric Seth Ginsberg Memorial Garden, the landsite had become a neglected yet overgrown dumping ground. The Family Reentry Program has already received attention from the Mayor’s office, the UCONN sustainability program, and community members to begin transforming the land. The gardens will be operated and maintained entirely by Family Reentry and its ex-offender clients, in service to the community. Additionally, the city of Bridgeport has agreed to shoulder a large portion of the site preparation as part of its community green garden initiative.
