Project Renewal Bedford Green House

Located at 2880 Jerome Avenue in the Bedford Park neighborhood of The Bronx, the Bedford Green House, a Project Renewal development, features 118 units of affordable housing for families, seniors, and singles.

The majority of the units are for those with mental illness. The building is designed to assist this population enter into and remain a contributing part of the broader community. This is achieved through a number of strategies, including on-site supportive services and a significant number of affordable and senior apartments into the building’s residential unit mix. In addition, the building has been laid out to encourage socialization and security including accessibility and physical activity.
The project will offer a number of amenities which further the healing potential of the building utilizing horticultural benefits and therapy.

To connect its residents to nature, the building will be covered in carbon sequestering plants and have an operational rooftop greenhouse where residents will be able to raise fresh fish and produce, partake in healthy cooking demos, and enjoy a community playground.

Designed by Edelman Sultan Knox Wood, with Hollister managing construction, the 83,000-square-foot building will pursue LEED Gold certification. Half of the greenhouse space will utilize aquaponics, with the other half focused on growing crops like kale, spinach, and arugula. In addition to the agricultural aspect, residents will have access to a workforce development office, laundry room, community area, warming pantry, and a playground. Plus, the building will feature custom artwork from locals.
