The Williamsburg Garden was originally created in 1986 by a multicultural group of neighbors. The site is located one block from an elementary and Charter Green School and is used by after school groups, as well as local community. With a grant from the Heckscher Foundation for Children came the addition of a new and vibrant children’s learning garden.
A lawn area with tables provides space for picnicking and instructional use. The updated design features sustainable elements such as:
• a Clivus composting toilet with solar-powered ventilation has been included to make this space comfortable for the community and school children;
• a rammed earth-block-constructed ‘casita’ shed anchors the rear of the garden with an attached arbor and deck for storage;
• rainwater is collected via channeled roof leaders to irrigate the garden of raised vegetable beds, blueberries and flowering shrubs.
