Karle Town Center

Karle Town Center Special Economic Zone
Commercial Plaza, Bangalore, India

In collaboration with architect Varun Kohli of Merge Studios, Billie Cohen ltd. designed the outdoor plazas for the office towers in Karle Town Centre, a new mixed use development outside the bustling city of Bangalore. The 72 acre site is nestled within the sensitive ecological ecosystem of Nagawara Lake, where the availability of contiguous land allows for the opportunity of an integrated and environmentally sensitive urban planning approach including storm water management.

Merge Studios created an undulating facade featuring a site-specific modular system designed to optimize solar shading, daylight, and natural ventilation within the buildings. Inspired by the rhythm of the architecture, the landscape design is composed of gently sloping seating walls, sunken gardens, and a series of winding paths that weave the seating areas with the traditionally celebrated theme of water.

Built over the roof of the parking garage, the design uses sustainable strategies including a one meter depth allowance at the center of plaza, which provides adequate soil volume for lush, healthy plantings. Solar panels installed on air vents supply electricity for water pumps and lighting. In addition, water from the rainy season is captured and stored to be used for irrigation and water features during the dry season.
