Douglas Manor Association hired Billie Cohen ltd. to create a master plan for the renovation of Memorial Field, Douglaston, NY, which is part of the Alley Creek Watershed, an important, healthy, urban ecological system. Here clean water, wetlands, fish, water birds, and other native species are protected from the headwaters of Little Neck Bay at the western end of Long Island Estuary. The abundant springs along the Alley Creek corridor supply clean, cool groundwater to many streams and wetlands along the adjacent shore. Expansive salt marsh helps to provide forage, nursery, and nesting habitat for fish and wildlife.
Since the park is along a tidal coast and subject to periodic flooding, erosion control and resiliency had to be addressed. The playground, basketball courts, shoreline areas, and picnic and seating areas were in desperate need of renovation. Proposed plantings enhance habitat and increase water infiltration. An overlook tower and signage throughout connect children to the local ecology and wetland ecosystem.
